Hi my name is Sharleen Cobourne and I am the chief director here at Mcdworks CIC . Make a change and donate is our motto that could be your time, resources or money. We are a group of people who have been blessed with a “special” child and we are excited to share some of the amazing things we do with our children with your loved ones. It’s not always possible to take the family on holiday especially in the current climate. Staycations have become increasingly popular so being able to facilitate short breaks and weekends away in the one of the best seaside towns in the Uk is a pleasure we look forward to you being able too experience! Having a child with downsydrome has been both challenging and rewarding through the years . I didn’t appreciate the benefits of being connected to families on a similar journey to myself until I got connected. Being able to reach families with special needs children and young people and offer short breaks and weekends away by the seaside gives us nothing but joy. In addition we will be offering alternative therapies namely Aromatherapy, sound therapy and yoga all of which can significantly improve well being for the whole family.
On the 10th of march 2009 is when my life changed. I had just given birth to a beautiful baby boy and I was feeling amazing, 5hrs labour was light work considering my first son was 21hrs!
The doctor came to check on us and informed me he would like to run some tests, I thought it was just routine. Shortly after that I was informed that my son had down syndrome .
I think I was in denial at first as he didn’t present what would be deemed as the common characteristics. I had no idea through my pregnancy and I guess I was in shock. There have been times when I have felt very isolated on this journey but then I got connected with families with children similar to mine it was a life line that I didn’t even appreciate that I needed.
At Mcdworks CIC the mission is too support families , children and young people with emotional and physical disabilities by offering weekends and short breaks away by the seaside along with some amazing alternative therapies. Creating opportunities to support families the way I was supported is a gift that I would like to share with as many people as possible. The African proverb says “it takes a village to raise a child” , we are the village.
Sound therapy uses music and instruments to affect the mood and emotions of the person listening . It has been proven to have a positive impact on a persons well being .
Yoga has many physical and emotional benefits helping someone to relax and sleep better , increases flexibility which then can help prevent injury. It improves circulation and cardio health.
Aromatherapy is a very powerful tool is the way it can uplift moods and therefore improving your health as everything starts from the mind once you change your state of mind for the better you change the way you feel physically
We care
We understand the daily challenges , we understand how important the support of others is through these challenges and how we gain strength from coming together.
The African proverb says “it takes a village to raise a child” , we are the village.
We are happy to be growing and helping more day by day.
